Final Party and Passport to Pakistan Drawing

Join us Wednesday May 26th for the final United We Read event. We’ll be having Pakistani pastries, enjoy modern and traditional Pakistani music, and reflect on Three Cups of Tea and how the shared reading experience has made an impact on our community. We will also hold the drawing for the prizes in our Passport to Pakistan program. All passports will be due at this time. If you can’t make it, be sure to stop by the Reference Desk to turn in you completed passport.

The festivities will begin at 7:00 pm in the Ferrentino Meeting Room.

Even though there are no more book discussions, you can still participate in the online discussion here on the blog. Just respond to any of the discussion questions posted here and bring your Passport to Pakistan in to the Reference Desk to get your Book Discussion stamp.

Events This Week

Monday: At 4:00 there will be a Mother-Daughter Tea Party in Youth Services. Call 708.95.1235 to sign up.

Wednesday: The Elmwood Park High School will be hosting their final event at 6:30 in the High School’s Auditorium. Barbara Janes, who has worked to build schools in Pakistan will be on hand to share her story. There will also be food and student displays. The entire community is welcome to attend.

Here at the library, Dorothy will host a book discussion of A Mighty Heart, the story of Marianne Pearl. Pearl’s husband Danny was a journalist who was killed will reporting from the middle east. The discussion will begin at 6:30 with a presentation of the film version, starring Angelina Jolie beginning at 7:00.

Thursday: At 3:3o, Join in the ancient rite of Mehndi, or Henna, tattooing that has been practiced in India, Pakistan, and many other nations for over 5,000 years. We’ll give you the materials you need to give your self henna tattoos that will last for weeks! In the basement community room. (Henna is a safe, non-toxic plant based dye that is not permanent, but will last for up to 3 weeks on skin.) This event is for teens only.

At 6:30, we will screen In This World, the story of Jamal and Enayatullah, two cousins and Afghan refugees who embark on a dangerous and clandestine overland odyssey that takes them from Pakistan to London in this gripping documentary-style drama from director Michael Winterbottom. Set in the aftermath of 9/11 and the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, Winterbottom uses a cast of non-professional actors who improvise real-life situations. The film won the BAFTA award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In anticipation of our last book discussion at Lolo’s on Saturday at Noon, here’s another question for you. Don’t forget that if you can’t make it out to one of our discussions, you can join the virtual discussion here. If you comment on one the questions, just bring in your passport and we’ll give you your book discussion stamp.

Did the book change your views toward Islam or Muslims? Consider the cleric Syed Abbas, and also the cleric who called a fatwa on Mortenson. Syed Abbas implores Americans to “look into our hearts and see that the great majority of us are not terrorists, but good and simple people.” Discuss this statement. Has the book inspired you to learn more about the region?

Book Discussion

We had a great time at the Afghani Cuisine sampling last night. You can see the photos in the previous posts below. We hope you’ll come out for the final party on May 26th at 7:00 where we will try some Pakistani foods.

For those of you who still haven’t gotten the Book Discussion sections of your Passport to Pakistan stamped, we’ll hold two final discussions in May. The first is the last Three Cups of Tea discussion which will be held at LoLo’s Subs and Pizza on Saturday May 8th at Noon. On Wednesday May 12th, Dorothy will lead a discussion of “A Mighty Heart” here at The Library at 6:30. You can pick up copies of both of the books any time.
